Mary’s Approach

Mindfulness based

Mindfulness Based

Mindfulness, according to Jon-Kabat Zinn, founder of the ‘Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society’ at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, and author of Full Catastrophe Living, is an “awareness that comes from paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment without judgement. . . in the service of self-understanding and wisdom.” Developing a routine using meditation and breathing practices can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, decrease negative thought patterns, and increase self-compassion. Some clients appreciate integrating mindfulness practices into their session. For others, the language of present-moment awareness without judgement guides the work.

Solution focused

Solution Focused

Solution Focused Brief Therapy is an evidence-based approach that emphasizes finding answers instead of examining problems. When someone can imagine how they want their life to be different and are willing to set very specific goals, they can work to find practical, sustainable solutions. The work is collaborative and may include assignments between sessions to maintain momentum and achieve a desired future.

Trauma Informed

Trauma Informed

The experience of trauma is thought by some experts to be universal. It can be derived from personal, cultural, historical, and/or intergenerational events and circumstances. Left unexplored, trauma can negatively impact health and well-being throughout someone’s life. A Trauma-Informed Approach is based in the principles of safety, choice, collaboration, trustworthiness, and empowerment.

CBT

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) shines a light on unhelpful ways of thinking which lead to behavior patterns that create problems. CBT is designed to help people recognize distortions in thinking and increase self-awareness so that they better understand their own and others’ behaviors. CBT focuses on creating insight into current circumstances and moving forward in ways that that improve coping and problem-solving mechanisms.

Somatic

Somatic/body-mind Integration

A Somatic Approach to behavioral health is rooted in the understanding that the mind and body are integrated, meaning that emotions are experienced both physically and mentally. Learning to identify and work with the physical sensations associated with emotions increases the capacity for healing on all levels. There are great possibilities for deepening personal growth and knowledge when learning to listen to the body.

Coaching

Coaching

When feeling stuck in certain habit patterns, it can be helpful to engage in coaching. This approach can be helpful in problem solving, finding answers to handle a toxic situation, or making big changes without having a place to start or a way to move forward. Coaching can focus on improving communication skills, setting healthy boundaries, and building on previous experiences of success. The coaching relationship is collaborative, interactive, and goal oriented.
